Generated assets can be low-poly enough for real-time, or they can be unusable. They can be stylistically coherent, or a mess. Your job: use AI to accelerate, then apply your quality and performance bar.

What AI Can Do

Asset generation:

  • 3D models from text or images. Textures, materials, simple animations. AI tools (and plugins for Unity/Unreal) are improving.
  • Good for: concept exploration, placeholders, background objects. Verify poly count, topology, and format before committing.

Environment creation:

  • "Generate a forest scene" or "Create a room." AI can draft. You optimize for real-time, lighting, and consistency.
  • Often needs heavy post-processing. LOD, culling, bakes. AI won't do that. You will.

Texture and material:

  • PBR textures, normal maps, variations. AI can produce. Check resolution, format, and visual coherence with your art direction.
  • Tiling, seam handling — AI sometimes struggles. Inspect before use.

What AI Misses

Performance:

  • XR runs at 72–120 FPS. Assets must be lightweight. AI generates for "looks good" not "runs on Quest 3."
  • You optimize. You reduce. You LOD. AI doesn't.

Spatial consistency:

  • In XR, scale and proportion matter. AI can produce objects that look wrong in stereo or at wrong scale.
  • Test in-headset. Always. AI can't.

Interaction design:

  • Can the user pick this up? Does it react? Does it fit the interaction model? AI generates static content. You design the experience.
  • Interaction is human-led. AI assists with assets.

Platform specifics:

  • Quest, Vision Pro, HoloLens — different constraints. AI doesn't target. You do.
  • Validate on device. Every time.

The Workflow

  1. Generate — Use AI for first pass. Set constraints if the tool allows (poly count, format).
  2. Optimize — Reduce, retopologize, LOD. Hit your performance budget.
  3. Integrate — Into your scene, your pipeline. Test in headset. Fix scale, lighting, interaction.
  4. Iterate — AI makes iteration faster. Use it. Don't expect final quality on first gen.
